“Consuming dairy saves the lives of cows.”
This was one of the most recent excuses I was given, in order to justify the consumption of dairy. To go into more detail, they said “we are helping cows because if they weren’t milked they would be uncomfortable and eventually explode.”
Sometimes I have no words.
Given the exploding scenario, I get the impression that some may be of the belief that a cow produces a constant stream of milk and we are, in fact, taking the surplus milk from the cow. This is, in fact, not the case. A cow produces milk to feed her newborn (just like a human) and a cow cannot create milk without being pregnant (just like a human).
Let’s work backwards:
How about we just stop impregnating cows in order to steal their milk?
Wow! I think I just solved the exploding cow problem.
We need cow milk as much as we need dog milk, rat milk or elephant milk and if you’re worried about your calcium intake, then worry not, as chickpeas, white beans, soybeans, almonds, broccoli, cabbage, tofu, figs and (even!) orange juice contain a lot of calcium (and none of the hormones, antibiotics and pus found in cow’s milk).
If you have any questions about veganism, giving up dairy or how you can help animals then please post them below or feel free to message me here. I want to help animals and I want to help you (if you want to be helped). 🙂
Thanks for reading 💚
Oat milk suits me.

This is brilliant haha, love how short and sweet it is! It’s amazing some of the logic people produce against veganism (a personal favourite is the one about the world becoming over populated by sheep and cows…in the same way that it’s over populated by animals that control their own breeding hahahha)

Hahah yep I’ve heard that one too. The logic is shocking when people become defensive and justify their meat eating! 💚

Well, that’s about as bad as people thinking chocolate milk comes from brown cows.

You’re right, but the dairy industry give off the impression that a cow is a milk-machine and not a mammel that can experience pain (when her calf is taken away!) 💚

Hey I used to think it came from brown cows when I was a kid! Haha

And I read in a book called “The China Study”, about a study that showed that ironically, the countries with the highest rates of osteoporosis are basically the same countries with the highest rates of consumption of milk. Many people around the world are lactose intolerant, and I certainly believe lots of modern health problems stem from drinking milk which has been hyper processed (pasteurized, homogenized) and so on.

Justin, you are 100% correct! There is a strong correlation between the consumption of milk and the breaking of bones. The dairy industry were incredibly clever to promote the opposite idea “dairy gives you strong bones and teeth”, nonsense.
I think your comment is mega Justin. I really appreciate you taking the time to read and comment 💚

Wow this is a new one. I’ve never heard that excuse before! I mean I love the one where people say if we didn’t eat the cows the earth would just be overrun with them. Like yeah, that’s really how that works. I feel like some people are just really dumb or in denial about what really goes on in the world.

People will come up with anything when they hear something they don’t like, e.g. You’re making animals suffer by drinking milk. Hence this person thought it was the best time to tell me that cows explode if they’re not milked, hence justifying their choices lol 💚

Great information! Always upsets me when someone defends taking milk from baby cows, it is not natural to drink milk!!!

Ha! I’ve never heard this but this goes back to people only thinking one dimensionally about an issue. The same can be said for a lot of feminist issues too, like the wage gap.

I like hearing some of the justifications as to why we choose to do things! Thanks, as always, for your perspective on issues I’m not all too familiar with. 🙂

You are sooooo welcome Ashley. Thank you for reading! You’re right, some of the justifications can be quite entertaining 💚

While I appreciate your decision to be vegan, I think this statement is an over exaggeration. If someone used this reason for drinking milk they aren’t educated. Yes there are many alternatives to milk based dairy, the decision to drink or not drink dairy should be an educated one

Thanks for commenting Christine but I can assure you that the exploding cow statement was not an exaggeration. This reasoning was meant to justify an action because someone began to feel guilty and as there is no real justification for drinking cow’s milk, the claim was ridiculous. Not many people know the cruelty that goes on in the dairy industry unfortunately but the world is waking up 💚

I feel like, with anything, its easy for people to make absurd excuses when they feel a little guilty about their behavior. I’d prefer just straight up “I like it so I’m doing it” than something dumb lol

I think you’re absolutely right Jamie. At least if someone is honest with themselves then we’re not having absurd arguments to contend with 🙂 💚

I don’t consume to much milk maybe because I’m a coffee person. and the last time I read.something about the milking cow they feed and inject something so these cows continuously gives milk which I think I a bit cruel.

It’s mega that you don’t consume a lot of dairy! 🙂
Also, you’re right about what you read – cows are given steroids and antibiotics so that they can produce more milk after giving birth. As well as enabling the cows to produce more milk, the chemicals are passed on to us through the milk. Not nice! 💚

This is great info and something I had never thought about before as I am not vegan. Though I doubt it would ever occur to me to think something so silly as cows will explode!! 🙂

Yea I genuinely doubt that someone would think a cow would naturally explode… It’s only when someone runs out of justifications to consume dairy that they go to extremes 💚

Wow, I don’t know if that is just hilarious or sad. Both? But this is coming from the same population who continue to shun science and other evidence-based information, so I guess I can’t be surprised.

Yea I can see it both ways too, haha! I find it hard when people want to talk about veganism but then get defensive when I have answers, but it tells me more about that person and how they feel when they come out with answers like this 🙂 💚

I always refer back to my kiddos. They all are lactose intolerant. So my thinking is if cow milk was supposed to be drank then so many would not get sick from it

This is exactly the kind of thinking that I love! BUT unfortunately the dairy industry will tell us otherwise… Like we need milk to have strong teeth and bones (nonsense!). Thank you so much for commenting 💚

I’ve heard that the cancer rate (breast cancer) is lower in Asia because of less lactose consumption; but then I’ve heard so many things that are…true or not. Anyway, I do consume a lot of milk and milk products because I like them, but still I think it’s important to know what’s behind, to make a decision and do it consciously and not being completely oblivious what effect certain behaviour or habit has or might have.

It’s true that dairy does increase the chances of cancer in the sex organs for both men and women. Remember milk contains a lot of hormones from the cow and that then gets tranferred into your body and into the bodies of your family. The majority of the population on our planet is lactose intolerant… Surely that tells us that cow’s milk isn’t suitable for our bodies. For more information on this topic, I would highly recommend you watch What The Health (it has no bad scenes) 🙂
I also loved dairy so I totally understand where you’re coming from… But vegan alternatives are fast becoming popular and will soon take over the dairy industry. They are healthier too. It’s important to know what you’re dealing with when your consuming another animal’s breast milk 💚
