The Threat

Let’s get straight to the hypothetical scenario.

Person X holds a knife to your dog’s throat. Person X then says,

You have two choices:
-Pay me £1000 and I’ll torture your dog really bad before I kill it.
-Pay me £2000 and I’ll torture your dog a little less before I kill it.

I don’t enjoy thinking of these scenarios so I apologise for asking you to put yourself in this position, but I want to know, what would you do?

Now, changing the subject slightly…

I asked Wonderful Husband what came to mind when he thought of ‘organic’, he replied ‘healthy, clean and expensive‘. On top of that, a lot of people tell me that they buy organic meat in hope that the animals had a better life before they were slaughtered. So to summarise, organic: healthy, clean, expensive and better conditions for animals.

Advertising is a powerful tool.

The organic industry (along with free-range, etc.) have portrayed themselves as a saint-like force fighting the good fight against the ‘factory farming’ industry. Well done organic farming!… However I see it in a different way:

If you don’t pay more money for our products we are going to keep farm animals in hellish conditions before we kill them.

Is that a threat?

A multi-billion dollar industry demands us to pay more money otherwise they’ll torture animals (even more) and then they’ll pay people to convince us that we should be grateful for how they treat those animals. Is anyone else feeling slightly uncomfortable about this?

Don’t let the farming industry use your compassion as a means to bribe you into paying more money for your food. Follow your compassion and go vegan instead. Veganism saves the lives of animals, it’s incredibly healthy and it helps save the environment. Organic is not the compassionate way forward, veganism is. As a vegan, people often ask me if I would eat meat if the animal had been treated well throughout its life. To me, the point is moot: an animal does not need to die for me to eat, so just because an animal has had a good life, that doesn’t justify killing it for food in the end. I wish people were more compassionate towards animals.

My mum read me something off an egg carton the other day about their hens running free in fields and woodlands and I was like ?? It’s almost worse to me, like why give them such a nice life just to torture and kill them anyway?

They are going to say anything they can to get even more money from people. The idea that we should pay them more to give animals a good life before slaughtering is ridiculous.

As always, really appreciate you taking the time to read and comment 🙂 💚

Truly welfarist activism’s goal is to ensure that the torture & murder continues on unabated.

    Another interesting hypothetical that I remember seeing in a social experiment;
    1. Would YOU kill an animal?
    2. Would you kill a human?
    …if ‘no’ to both…hey, that’s vegan.

While I respect your decision to be vegan, there are many local farmers who deserve a right to make a living. They don’t rely on big media. Many local cheese mongers are artisans who struggle to make a living. They shouldn’t be lumped into corporate agenda

Thanks for this comment Christine but I think you’ve misunderstood the post entirely. I’m not saying anything about small businesses… I’m talking about the whole concept of asking for more money so that an animal suffers less – this should not be the case. Thanks 💚

‘Making a living’ by way of subjugating other species is merely a vehicle to continue oppression through supremacy. Anything less than animals living a natural life is the human mistreatment of an animal for your pleasure, & it is unacceptable.
Do you share this same belief with dog meat farmers that are just ‘trying to make a living’? Doubtful.
We vegans want to lessen suffering of ALL species.

Advertisement has tricky ways of making things sound more appealing, and this is a great example of how just because the product has rganic or whatnot on it, doesn’t mean it’s “better” in the way you mention.

Well yes, that’s the job of advertisement, is to make things appealing. Even if it does turn quite outlandish behaviour on it’s head to appeal to a society as though the business is doing us a favour 💚

How odd that people associate “organic” with living a good life. But, I do remember a skit in Portlandia where they asked “did the chicken have a good life? Did he have friends?”

Thanks for this post and giving a bit of insight on how those that are vegans feel. I am not vegan or even buy anything organic. I try to eat healthy as much as I can but it does get hard.

You’re going to struggle to eat healthy if you eat any dairy/eggs or meat that are not organic, simply because of the amount of antbiotics, steroids and hormones that you’ll be consuming. If you’d like any more information about this then feel free to get in touch 💚

I’m not a vegan and I don’t “trust” organic but I eat as healthy as I can. However, sometimes I don’t know if there’s anything “fresh and healthy” left in supermarkets. Meat is full of antibiotics and veggies of pesticides so I don’t know what to eat anymore…

I absolutely agree with you! Best thing to do is to try and source veg from places that stock from local farms and it’s also helpful to wipe your veggies with apple cider vinegar as well as washing with water.

I also get that feeling that there is just no way out of eating contaminated products now… But there is still no reason that animals should die.

Thanks for your mega comment 💚

Ha ha you are so right about this organic industry. They sure are giving a false image about organic meat. I am not sure if I will turn in to a vegan soon but you do have a valid point that made me think.

I consider myself vegetarian – I don’t consume any animal products at all except for eggs, which I only have every now and then because they’re from my aunt’s chickens:they are her pets, not for farming or anything like that.

But it still upsets me how most people don’t really make the effort to understand where this comes from – I guess what angers me the most is how people have such double standards and crucify asians for running dog meat farms while they do the exact same for cows, pigs and chickens…

Animals deserve to be loved, not eaten… 😥

I feel the same way about the organic industry. Advertising can have such a big impact on consumer actions.. I’m not sure what the solution is! I think becoming a vegan is a personal decision, and for me, though I rarely eat meat, I don’t think it is the right decision, at least not right now.

I always love it when you comment Sarah, thank you!

Veganism comes at different stages for everyone so I totally understand and I think just the fact that you rarely eat meat is a very big deal. I’m very relieved that you feel the same way about the organic industry… I think it’s great in some ways (it’s definitely healthier!) but the concept is an absolute sham.

I really appreciate you commenting 💚

I’m surprised that people think of organic like that, “animals having a better life”. It’s probably kinda true because they probably weren’t shot up with a bunch of steroids and etc. but they still die. When I see organic I just think it’s healthier quality but not “animals have a better life”. Thank you for posting this!

I honestly would love to go vegan but I just find it difficult to cook hearty vegan meals for my family that don’t take ages. For example I wanted to try Vegan Lasagna but to make a cheese cashew sauce seemed almost impossible especially since i don’t have a vitamix

Ah I can totally understand as it can seem quite a lot of work when you begin.

In regards to the cheese example, have you ever thought about trying vegan cheese from your local supermarket? I’m guessing that when you make lasagne normally you use cheese made from cow’s milk… So in that case vegan cheese might even be healthier 🙂 (if health is something you’re considering).

If you do have any questions then feel free to get in touch. I have a ton of recipe websites that I use and I’d be more than happy to share them with you (and I promise to not give you pressure about going vegan haha!) 💚

I don’t really think that my comment will be a very valuable one since I’m not a vegan. I think everyone has the right to choose his/her path and I totally respect that. However, if we imagine the situation that I got lost in the forest and a big bear or a wolf attacked me to have a nice dinner, no one would ask me how good life I had before my death. 🙂

You’d be surprised how valuable your response is to me (I write this blog for non-vegans, not vegans lol).

I completey agree with the forest scenario… But I’m sure you’d have a problem if the big bear or wolf had created factories all over the planet to breed us, take away our children, kill us and then eat us.

I genuinely appreciate this comment though, it’s very interesting. Thanks 💚
